5 Tips to Choose the Perfect Lingerie for Your Session

Ever have one of those days when you feel like you’ve got nothing to wear? You try on endless options, but nothing seems quite right. Now imagine you’re at a lingerie shop searching for the perfect outfit for your upcoming boudoir session. Yikes! Talk about pressure. Color, shape, style - a girl can go crazy trying to figure out what works best on her unique body. Well, take a deep breath ladies because I’m about to offer my best tips for choosing the perfect lingerie for your session - straight from the boudoir photographer’s mouth.

1 | Play Up Your Body Shape

My first, and possibly most important tip, is to play up your body shape. If there was ever a time to flaunt your curves This. Is. it. On the same note, if there’s an area you don’t want to highlight, choose an option that will divert attention away from it.

For example, if you’re worried about your tummy area choose something that covers it or even gives the illusion of a different shape, like a corset. If you’re petite, opt for high cut bottoms to elongate your legs. And if you’re small chested, well this is exactly why the push-up bra was invented.

Pro tip: No babydolls - the shape of a bell just doesn't flatter anyone.

2 | Choose Complementary Colors

While a pop of color can add some visual interest to your photos, if you’re looking for colors everyone looks beautiful in, then stick to the classics like black, white, blush and even red. Remember, we want YOU to be the focal point of your gallery, not the lingerie. Choose a color that compliments your skin tone and hair color without distracting from your beauty. 

Pro tip: Avoid neon - it glows and becomes the center of attention.

3 | Pair with Something Everyday

Wearing lingerie and looking sexy doesn’t always have to be for someone else. This session is just as much for you as it is for a significant other you may share the photos with. So if an all out sexy ensemble isn’t your style, try pairing it with something you’d normally wear.

Things like a silky robe, a button down shirt, or even an oversized sweater and panties can be just as sexy as the revealing lace outfits at the lingerie store. This experience is all about making you feel empowered and the first step in that journey is feeling comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing.

Pro tip: Bodysuits look ah-mazing with skinny jeans. 

4 | Accessorize

Once you’ve decided on the perfect outfit, let’s really send it over the edge with some strategically chosen accessories. The trick here is to keep it simple. Something like a nice pair of high heels or a long strand of pearls make for beautiful shots. Some of my favorite pieces are those with special meaning like your wedding ring or maybe your grandmother’s antique earrings. These unique pieces add visual interest and just plain make you feel good which really shows through in photos.

Pro tip: Skip heels that have an ankle strap as they can make your legs look shorter.

5 | Pick What YOU Love

Above all, the most important thing to keep in mind is to choose lingerie that you love and feel confident in. When you look back at your photos, you want to remember what an empowering experience you had. Don’t choose something just because you think it’s what you’re “supposed to wear” to a boudoir session. 

And even though you may be gifting your gallery to your partner, this photoshoot is ultimately about you and for you. Choose lingerie that you’ll still be pleased with years down the road.

Pro tip: Splurge for something new, not that bra and panty set buried in the back of your drawer.
